Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, too many organizations—both private and public—are failing to achieve their full potential; managerial shortcomings and a lack of strategic thinking are holding them back. This applies to all organizations, regardless of size, sector or location. Many authors emphasize the role of good leadership and management in helping firms to achieve sustainable economic prosperity and growth. Strong leadership and management are key factor in fostering innovation and strategic flexibility, unlocking the potential of the workforce and ensuring organizations have the right strategies to drive sustainability. Overcoming weaknesses and improving leadership and management capabilities are fundamental for firms to create a culture with ambition, confidence, resilience and skills to respond to current economic challenges and compete successfully both nationally and globally.

This Special Issue aims to contribute to a more holistic understanding of the modern approaches of management and leadership for sustainable business performance. We view management and leadership broadly and welcome both theoretical contributions and empirical analyses (qualitative and quantitative) that integrate modern leadership approaches and management practices able to facilitate organizational adaptations in competitive environments, creating the ground for a sustainable performance enhancement.

Issues concerning quality management, innovation management, creativity, strategic flexibility and employee motivation are also welcomed. We are interested in a wide range of novel topics in management, leadership and sustainable performance, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Contemporary trends and business challenges;
  • Knowledge management and sustainable business performance;
  • Management of organizational change;
  • Innovation management, entrepreneurship and sustainable business performance;
  • Leadership styles and sustainable business performance;
  • Empowerment and staff engagement;
  • Innovative leadership;
  • Ambidextrous leadership;
  • Entrepreneurial leadership;
  • Sustainable leadership;
  • Talent management for sustainable business performance;
  • Strategic flexibility;
  • Leadership and business models;
  • Management of manufacturing, including Industry 4.0;
  • Emerging trends in management and leadership styles;
  • Organizational culture;
  • Organizational behavior and sustainable business performance.

In this way, the Special Issue’s goal is to become a leading forum for debate and the exploration of the interdisciplinary field of management, leadership and sustainable performance.

Nowadays, any consideration regarding project management implies an all-encompassing approach constituted by three perspectives: organizational, human, and engineering. In this sense, it is necessary for the project manager to reflect on various issues, such as ethics, the understanding of the environment, leadership, teamwork, achieving results, change in management, the adoption of new technologies, and knowledge management, among many others, all this with the intention of ensuring success through value creation, consistent and aligned with the expectations of the different stakeholders. Because of the adoption of a comprehensive vision of project management, disciplines such as philosophy have become logical within the reasoning of organizational management. Classic postulates such as those of the Stoic school have become references for modern leader-managers because of their approach associated with personal development, self-discipline, self-control, logic, balance with the environment, and the creation of social value. The research analyzed how the postulates of the Stoic philosophy can determine the high performance of project teams. To achieve this, 70 project managers from different small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in Bogotá, Colombia, were surveyed about the seven main thoughts of Stoicism and the possible relationship with the performance of their project teams. Based on their answers, a correlational model of structural equations was applied to obtain the conclusions of this study. The results obtained in this investigation are intended to contribute significantly to the maturity and modernization of the project management discipline. Full article

Prior research on the successful design and construction of data visualization systems or information management systems has not fully taken into account the holistic experience of employees working with information within the organization but has centered on specific aspects, such as user experience or data quality, attempting to go against information management quality, as those approaches can significantly influence users’ perceptions and their motivation to effectively use such tools for decision making. This study addresses the information consumer experience (ICX) in a Chilean Higher Education institution through the design and implementation of an user-centric centralized information management system. This system was created using an adapted design thinking methodology with an ICX perspective to identify and integrate the information consumers’ demands and other factors correlated with ICX into the system’s design. The proposed system is a technological extension of an information resource validation process that involves senior data analysts from the Analytics Department and external data analysts from other departments across the organization. This process helps to address data quality and information management quality (IMQ) problems of the organization, representing a centralized data source for all information consumers into the organization, offering consistent, accessible, and good quality data to address daily work and enhance information consumers experience, and managerial work. The purpose of this paper is to develop a comprehensive structural model to understand the outcomes of organizational ambidexterity (OA) within the manufacturing and service sector. It focuses on evaluating the effects of OA on business performance and strategic flexibility while also exploring the under-researched relationship between strategic flexibility and business performance. To accomplish this objective, an empirical survey was carried out among a sample of 370 Greek manufacturing and service firms. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were utilized to extract and validate the latent constructs examined. Finally, the structural relationships among these latent constructs were determined using structural equation modeling (SEM). The study’s findings reveal the significant contributions of OA to both firm performance and strategic flexibility. Additionally, the results demonstrate the positive influence of strategic flexibility on business performance. This research sheds light on the multifaceted impacts of ambidexterity, offering valuable implications for managers, decision-makers, and practitioners. The outcomes underscore the importance of ambidexterity in various dimensions of business performance and highlight its role in fostering strategic flexibility. This study stands out by offering a holistic model that explicates the outcomes of OA within the manufacturing and service sector. It places particular emphasis on the interplay between business performance and strategic flexibility, an area that has received limited attention in prior research. By empirically examining these relationships and providing practical guidelines, the proposed model enriches our understanding of ambidexterity’s significance and supports further research in this domain within organizations. In this study, based on a resource-based view, we investigate the influence of ambidextrous leadership (reflected in transformational and transactional leadership styles) on sustainability performance (reflected in economic, environmental, and social performance) through the serially mediating mechanisms of organizational ambidexterity (reflected in explorer and exploiter attributes) and the circular economy (reflected in fields of action). By applying structural equation modelling analyses to survey data collected from private and public Greek organizations, which operate in manufacturing, services, and trade sectors, under an externally dynamic environmental context, we found that (a) organizational ambidexterity and the circular economy fields of action positively mediate the relationship between ambidextrous leadership and sustainability performance and (b) the mechanism originating from transformational leadership has a higher impact on sustainability performance compared to the mechanism that originates from transactional leadership. Accordingly, this study addresses the aspect of the special issue that refers to modern approaches to management and leadership for sustainable business performance research and makes several theoretical and practical implications. This paper aims to report on the development and assessment of a conceptual model for benchlearning capability, which facilitates sustainable performance improvement. Following an in-depth literature review, two main dimensions of benchlearning capability were identified. A focus group approach was used in order to establish the connection between these dimensions and the main construct (benchlearning capability). A questionnaire was designed and administered to 502 individuals from 74 organizations that used the Common Assessment Framework, and a total of 163 respondents replied. For the structural model assessment, the PLS-SEM technique was employed. Literature reveals that benchlearning encompasses both comparative evaluation and organizational learning mechanisms. Moreover, the focus group concluded that Organizational Learning Capability (OLC) and Benchmarking Capability (BMKC) are positively related to Benchlearning Capability (BLNC). The quantitative analysis showed that the factor OLC and BMKC are related positively and significantly to BLNC. This paper is the first attempt to approach the benchlearning capability construct and to validate its model. It is also a first attempt towards providing empirical evidence that could help public managers understand the BLNC concept and formulate accordingly the appropriate strategy for improving the benchlearning capability and therefore achieving sustainable performance in their organizations. This current study aimed to investigate the relationship among green transformational leadership (GTL), organizational citizenship behavior towards the environment (OCBE), organizational identification, and sustainable performance. Data from 201 manufacturing firm representatives in the northeast of China were collected by using an online survey form and then analyzed using PLS-SEM. Findings revealed that GTL is positively related to sustainable performance, and OCBE mediates the relationship between GTL and sustainable performance. In addition, the moderating role of organizational identification between GTL and OCBE has not been proved in the current study. This current study enriches the literature on sustainable performance, finding that GTL plays an important role in sustainable performance. Moreover, this study provides information to employers who want to improve sustainable performance by implementing GTL practices. It further enables them to understand the significance of OCBE in improving sustainable performance. Full article

Open Innovation has great significance and so far several definitions have been proposed, the most widely accepted definition referring to the correlation of Open Innovation with research organizations. Helix models have been proposed to analyze how collaborations work among key stakeholders and research centers and they were found to have a prominent part in all their iterations. This work presents the challenges that research organizations face in terms of interaction with other organizations, their operations (resources, funding issues), and how they determine the research directions to be followed, and analyzes how the adoption of Open Innovation practices can tackle these challenges and the effects it has. The Open Innovation practices of outsourcing and co-creation are mentioned, with the latter needing to be further developed and elaborated. We propose a novel process, called Research Loop, which aims and succeeds to provide Open Innovation for research organizations. It achieves to involve several different organizations, identify existing research gaps, and produce new knowledge. The proposed process includes the various advantages of applying Open Innovation to the analyzed research centers. Full article
