Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to address a highly topical research topic in sports science.

The physical activity of school children should not only be confined to the school environment, but should also cover the sports practices that school-age children engage in outside school. Both practices should be in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization to ensure the health of children and adolescents.

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 is causing changes in children's sports practices. It is necessary to identify those practices that have a positive impact on the health of schoolchildren and are sustainable.

In order to achieve sustainability, it is necessary to analyze the consequences of the implementation of different pedagogical models and active methodologies in physical education and school sport. The evaluation of this intervention must be objectifiable using inertial devices and subjective systems of load quantification. It is also necessary to know how these models affect psychological and sociological aspects.

We invite participation in this Special Issue to all those who develop empirical work in populations of children and adolescents oriented to improve their health and with teaching and training methodologies that facilitate sustainability. Theoretical and literature review papers are also welcome.

Sports leadership research has increased in recent years in sport psychology and is now considered an indication of variables such as sport efficacy, satisfaction and happiness with sport, and emotional well-being. The aim of this manuscript is to analyze the relationship between informal sports leadership and each of the dimensions of emotional intelligence. Two validated and standardized instruments were applied to measure each of the psychological constructs, respectively, that make up the thematic axis of this research. Thus, to measure self-perceived leadership, we used the Sport Leadership Behavioral Scale and its Spanish version, the Sport Leadership Behavioral Inventory. On the other hand, to measure the self-perceived emotional intelligence of the participants, we used the Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS-24). The total number of participants was 163 students with a mean age of 20.33 years (SD = 3.44) from university degrees related to physical activity and sport sciences. The main contribution of our research lies in the demonstration that there is a statistically significant relationship between clarity and emotional regulation with empathy (=0.18, p < 0.001), decision making (=0.08, p < 0.001), social support l (=0.19, p < 0.001) and sports values (=0.01, p < 0.001). This indicates that the definition of a leader is a person who is aware of their own emotions and those of their group, who fosters positive, communicative, supportive inter-relationships based on sporting values, through the exercise of a positive influence on the other members of the group. In conclusion, this research demonstrates the existence of a significant connection between the components of emotional intelligence (attention, clarity and regulation) and sports leadership (social support, empathy, sports values, decision making and task orientation). Thus, this study concludes that this link is characterized by being direct and positive. Full article

The different deployments that involve youth soccer players’ development must be discussed and organized by adults, thinking about creating safe, challenging, and stimulating environments for them. Thus, our aim with this study is to investigate variables about family participation in the players’ development processes in the context of children’s competitions in Brazil. This qualitative–descriptive research was conducted in the under-10 category of the Nova Liga Gaúcha de Futebol Infantil (NOLIGAFI) through interviews with twelve coaches and in loco observations. The results showed that all coaches highlighted the importance and role of the family in the healthy development of young players. However, fact-based evidence reveals negative family participation. From this complex scenario, the coaches become fundamental figures for mediating and guiding this process, organizing proposals aimed at educating parents in the sports scenarios to promote an environment of competitive practice in football that is healthier for children. Following previous calls regarding the importance of using sport as a platform for promoting youth psychosocial development and mental health, this case study aimed to understand the challenges faced by coaches and technical directors in the face of their individual efforts to infuse a positive youth development focus into a nationwide youth sports program in Brazil. After conducting semi-structured interviews, we conducted an inductive−deductive thematic analysis. High-order themes were organized according to the dimensions of the Framework for Planning Youth Sport Programs That Foster Psychosocial Development. The challenges faced appear to be interconnected. Since the program’s goals are not evident to the stakeholders, parents seemed not to support the absence of participation in competitive events. The lack of a structured methodology for implementing the program hinders coaches from planning and delivering practices by concurrently integrating sport skills and life skills development. Furthermore, the program presents difficulties in ensuring its effectiveness through assessment processes. Full article

Motivation is an important field in sport because it is related to the satisfaction, psychological well-being, or adherence to sport. The Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise Scale (PNSE) is one of the questionnaires that assess motivation from the Self-Determination Theory. Online tools are growing because of the advantages that they offer. The PNSE has been validated in different populations but never in its digital version. The aim of the present study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the digital version of the PNSE hosted on the MenPas platform. The current study included 1050 platform users aged 18 to 58 who engage in regular physical-sports activity. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the 18-item model was conducted, and invariance was performed according to gender and type of sport. The results indicated that the measurement model displayed a good fit to the data: (CFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.08, SRMR = 0.06; df = 132; B-S p = 0.02–0.07): general sample (χ2 = 934.86, χ2/df = 7.08), female (χ2 = 699.94, χ2/df = 5.30), male (χ2 = 442.42, χ2/df = 3.35) individual sports (χ2 = 753.17, χ2/df = 5.71), and team sports (χ2 = 390.44, χ2/df = 2.96). Appropriate values of invariance, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and composite reliability were obtained. The digital version of the PNSE shows adequate psychometric properties and it could improve the data collection process in future investigations. Full article

Alternative sports are a popular sport practice that is being developed in the educational context, and its usefulness and validity is beginning to be disseminated through scientific publications. There are no documents that analyse these sports modalities. This research aimed to analyse the scientific production of alternative invasion team sports indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The guidelines established by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) were followed. We studied variables grouped by contextual, procedural, and specific of alternative invasion team sports information. Seventy-one research studies published before 1 March 2023 were reviewed. A growth in the scientific literature was identified in the period 2004 to 2022. The predominant research approach was quantitative, where the most common designs were experiments and quasi-experiments. The most implemented sports were Floorball, Ultimate, and Korfball. They were oriented to a greater extent to the development of psychological factors, physical-motor factors, and values. The most-used pedagogical models were the Game-Centred Model and the Sports Education Model. Progress was generated by the practice itself and the use of these pedagogical models. The use of the hybridisation of the Self-Construction of Materials and Sports Education Model stood out, which favoured respect for the environment, education in sustainability, and prosocial behaviour. Sustainability becomes a fundamental objective in physical education classes. The scientific evidence of alternative invasion team sports is limited; therefore, the need to develop research on this topic of study is evident. Full article

The aim was to review the effects of interventions based on self-determination theory and achievement goals theory on intention to be physically active in the future in physical education students, as well as to conduct a meta-analysis to determine the overall effect size of these interventions. PRISMA guidelines were followed to conduct this systematic review and meta-analysis. Three scientific electronic databases were used: Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, and SportDiscus. A total of eleven studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Effect size for intention to be physically active of each study was calculated using the means and standard deviations before and after the intervention. The overall effect size for intention was moderate (standardized mean difference = 0.47 with 95% CI from 0.28 to 0.67), while the heterogeneity was large. Seven of the eleven studies reported significant within-group improvements in intention after the intervention. Eight studies showed significant between-group differences in favor of the experimental group. The findings showed that teaching strategies, family involvement, and the use of videos related to physical activity participation may be relevant factors that must be considered by educators and researchers to conduct future effective interventions. Interventions based on self-determination theory and achievement goals theory could be useful in the process of the promotion of physical activity. However, given the large heterogeneity, these findings must be taken with caution. Full article

Attentional neurodiversity is evidenced in the majority of current schools. The role that physical education plays for the inclusion of students with attentional problems in the school is quite relevant. This essay aims to show the effectiveness of sports and physical exercise on the core symptoms of schoolchildren and adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). What is more, this proposal sheds light the key differences between clinical conditions of physical exercise and/or sport interventions and the ecological conditions of physical education lessons where the students with attentional problems should be included. Finally, this essay puts forward the real need for bridging the gap between physical education and science by changing the curriculum based programs, re-designing the teachers’ training programs, and acquiring the scientific recommendations in order to ensure the inclusion of all students according to Agenda 2030.
