Tourism, Culture, and Heritage

A section of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050).

Section Information

Tourism is widely recognized as one of the most progressive industries that helps to guide global sustainable development. In particular, the UNESCO World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Program have led the way to protect and manage many of the world’s cultural, environmental, and heritage destinations for future generations of travelers. As tourism numbers grow, it contributes to an area’s social development, economic value, inclusive development, and environmental sustainability. International mobility is the catalyst for increased tourism destination accessibility and sustainable management. Culture, environment, and heritage are considered to be the most salient factors that successfully attract tourists to destinations. In this sense, achieving respectful and sustainable tourism is the key to developing and promoting tourism to global destinations. The Tourism, Culture, and Heritage Section seeks multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions that offer unique insights into how tourism destination development and management efforts interphase with local communities and how visitors attracted to global destinations view sustainable tourism destination experiences.
