Sustainable Oceans

Section Information
The oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and sustain the livelihood of three billion people. However, the sustainability of our oceans is under severe threat due to warming, acidification, eutrophication, overfishing, and pollution. For instance, coral reefs worldwide are whitening at an alarming rate, and the Dead Zones (areas of water that lack sufficient oxygen to support life) have risen from 400 in 2008 to 700 in 2019 and are still growing. Still, over half of key marine and coastal biodiversity areas are not protected.
Therefore, there is an urgent need for an interdisciplinary approach to disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge that would help researchers and stakeholders capture the real meaning of ocean sustainability. This section accepts submissions that present and review new concepts, methodologies, mitigation measures, and regulations that would help sustain the ocean environment. The presentation of field data based on specific case studies of general interest is also welcome.
Potential authors are encouraged to contact the Section Editor-in-Chief with a tentative title and a brief outline when they can not confirm whether the paper fits within the Section's scope. Reviews, research papers, and field studies must consolidate or increase the knowledge in this specific field. All the information presented should be critically discussed in light of the existing literature.
