Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Engineering sciences are widely applied in smart and intelligent systems. Smart energy systems, smart cities, smart power grids, and smart homes are among these examples that are widely related to engineering sciences. The increasing development of these systems requires the effective use of emerging technologies and the use of algorithms and optimal designs.

In this Special Issue, we will aim to study and analyze new engineering methods and approaches in smart cities in terms of theory and application. Furthermore, we intend to examine the latest ideas and new findings presented in engineering related to urban smartness in a practical way. In this regard, this Special Issue will focus on application of engineering in smart energy systems and smart cities. Supporting topics such as theory of control, analysis, measurement, and the simulation and performance assessment of intelligent structures also will be covered.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • Applications of engineering in smart cities;
  • Smart energy systems;
  • Cyber-physical systems in smart cities;
  • Resilient architectures in smart cities;
  • Smart grids, micro-grids and smart homes;
  • Different topologies of smart energy systems;
  • Application of artificial neural network (ANN) and machine learning (ML) in smart cities;
  • Simulation and performance assessment of smart cities;
  • Smart cities architecture and urbanization;
  • Optimization and algorithms in smart cities

Selected and extended version of the papers submitted to the 6th International Conference on Engineering Sciences (ICES 2023) (http://icesci.org/index.php) will be published in this special issue "New Engineering Approaches in Smart Cities, Theory and Application".

The concept of the “smart city” has emerged with the advancement of technology, but some facilities are not sufficiently intelligent, such as parking lots. Hence, this paper proposes an inexpensive and plug-to-play camera-based smart parking system for airports. The system utilizes inverse perspective mapping (IPM) to provide an aerial view image of the parking lot, which is then processed to extract parking space information. The system also includes a guidance system to assist drivers in finding available parking spaces. The system is simulated on a 3D scene based on the parking lot of Macao International Airport. In the experiment, our system achieved an accuracy rate of 97.03% and a mean distance error of 8.59 pixels. This research study shows the potential of enhancing parking lots using only cameras as data collectors, and the results show that the system is capable of providing accurate and useful information. It performs well in parking lots with open space, in particular. Moreover, it is an economical solution for implementing a smart parking lot. Full article
