Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious matter and one that has garnered much attention from diverse academic fields. Major contributions to the study of intimate partner violence from criminological, psychological, and sociological perspectives have proffered theories, highlighted a variety of risk factors, and proposed preventative measures. Despite the research output, there remains significant gaps in our understanding of why intimate relationships sometimes turn violent. Sexual infidelity has been identified as a likely trigger for violence between intimate partners, yet research on this aspect of IPV remains relatively limited. Individual and group differences that modulate this risk are not well understood. A better understanding of sexual infidelity and IPV may also be gained by examining other features within intimate relationships, such as their duration and intensity, along with extradyadic factors, including the availability of partner alternatives. Furthermore, much of the existing research on sexual infidelity and IPV has focused on cisgender, heterosexual men and women. Thus, this is a call for a broader and more inclusive study of the relationship between sexual infidelity and IPV.
