Fiber-optic sensors can be used to retrieve information about physical and chemical parameters where such sensors are linked with innovation of novel and smart materials. Despite the great technological advances attained in recent years in this field, there are still some topics that could be addressed to further improve such sensing systems. First, even more miniature and reliable sensing systems need to be designed and validated on a case-by-case basis, especially in realistic scenarios with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Second, great attention should be paid to the development of effective smart materials for miniatured optical sensor devices, able to solve issues in different fields.
Moreover, sensors based on novel, functional, and flexible materials have recently been proposed, which are currently the subject of dynamic and fruitful fundamental and applied research with upcoming new applications and developments. In this context, this type of technology is a growing research and application area at the intersection of health and general engineering.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to collect advances in fundamental research, development of technologies, as well as innovative materials and applications for miniature fiber-optic sensors.
It is our pleasure to invite you to submit original research papers, short communications or state-of-the-art reviews within the scope of this Special Issue. Contributions can range from fundamental properties of smart materials to their fabrication and characterization, as well as innovations in processing technologies for the development of new optical fiber sensor elements.
Applications including, but not limited to marine, mechanical, civil, pharmaceutical, oil and gas industries, human and animal health monitoring, environment monitoring, harsh environments, food processing and monitoring, and medical instrumentation are welcome.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
