Dear Colleagues,
The ongoing trend of digitalization can be seen in a plethora of other trends, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Industry 4.0, and artificial intelligence (AI). Sensors play a key role in enabling the development of all these innovations, because they are the sources of data. Besides the most prominent optical and MEMS sensors, there are acoustic sensors. This Special Issue is focused on the guided acoustic wave sensors, which are part of the acoustic sensors, since they allow addressing applications that are otherwise hard to solve. Thus, they have their own transformative power with respect to their applications, but also specific challenges that have to be solved to make them robust and reliable. The aim is to show how guided acoustic wave sensors can address applications that other sensors have trouble with, such as harsh environment (high temperatures, high pressures, electronic discharges, corrosive conditions, etc.), how new manufacturing technologies such as three-dimensional (3D)-printing allow for new designs (e.g. the use of metamaterials), and how new algorithms (e.g. the use of AI) lead to better evaluation of measured results.

Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
