Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Many new discoveries are being made in modern astronomy as a result of the ability to aggregate observations across the entire electromagnetic spectrum (with latest extensions to astroparticle physics, gravitational wave astronomy, etc.) and thanks to the cross-matching of massive multi-petabyte scaled sky surveys. The new astronomical instruments SKA, LSST, EUCLID, etc. are expected to generate tens of petabytes of raw data per year, and their future archives are expected to operate at the cutting edge of modern IT technology, with embedded state-of-the-art machine learning functionality. At the same time, the geosciences benefit greatly from satellite observations and remote sensing, where the continuous flow of new hyperspectral data, motion and displacement measurements have to be combined with accurate reference data obtained by geophysics, hydrology, and terrain investigations.

The main goal of this Special Issue, which aims to demonstrate the potential synergy between astronomy and geosciences, is to provide an overview of technologies and methodologies, as well as references to practical applications in many important fields related to knowledge discovery in astro- and geo-science. The purpose is to provide a background and present some ideas and references that could be useful in the design of fully operational data analysis systems and of an experimental data science collection.

We invite researchers from all relevant fields to submit their most recent findings for publication in this Special Issue. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Astronomy and astrophysics;
  • Earth observation;
  • Acquisition, processing, and visualization in geosciences and astronomy;
  • Astrogeoinformatics.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sci is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
