Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, many cities and countries have been paying more and more attention to the protection of the ecological environment during urban expansion, and the protection of mountains, water, forests, and farmlands is also increasing. At the same time, more attention is being paid to the high-quality development and sustainability of the social economy. Therefore, in the process of rapid urban development, how to reasonably protect the eco-environment, evaluate the impact of the ecological environment in the process of urban expansion from a multi-dimensional perspective, and propose more reasonable protection measures, is an important issue faced by all countries to achieve sustainable development.

The changes in the eco-environment resulting from urban expansion involve studies at different scales. For local and regional scales, changes in biodiversity and ecosystem service value will be focused on; at a larger global scale, it is necessary to consider impacts on global food security, human well-being, climate change, and so on. The monitoring and research on the changes in the eco-environment in the city is an important aspect to understand the rationality of urban expansion. The comparative analysis of different countries and regions is conducive to excavating the rationality of urban expansion and the protection of the eco-environment. With the help of remote sensing technology, urban expansion and changes in the eco-environment can be monitored at a large scale, providing an effective technical means for comprehensive multi-scale research.

As a result, this Special Issue aims to present the latest advances in remote sensing estimation and applications of urban land expansion and eco-environmental consequences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Applications of new generations and high-resolution remote sensing data in urban expansion;
  • Determination of the boundaries of urban expansion based on remote sensing images;
  • Environmental change monitoring in suburban areas;
  • Machine learning for long-term and high-resolution urban expansion;
  • Urban expansion and eco-environment change monitoring based on different remote sensing data (e.g., high-resolution, night-time light, InSAR);
  • Interactions between urban expansion and eco-environment change at local, regional, and global scales.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
