Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Polymer composites with bioactive compounds have wide applications in food packaging and are of particular interest to the healthcare sector. The introduction of bioactive compounds into polymer matrices makes it possible to transfer functional characteristics, such as antioxidant, anti-mould, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory capacities, to inert materials such as polymers. However, biomolecules are often vulnerable to weathering and degrade rapidly in the presence of oxygen, light, heat, and pH changes. The immobilization and encapsulation of bioactive molecules in carrier systems protect them from physical and chemical damage, prolonging their lifespan and, in some cases, promoting their controlled release. The resulting hybrid systems are dispersed in a polymer matrix or deposited on a surface, endowing a material with desirable functional properties. Recently, new methods for preparing bioactive polymer composites involving different types of organic or inorganic carriers were explored. These materials are attractive due to their undemanding processing methods (melt compounding, surface coating/spraying, electrospinning, thin-layer deposition) and the possible use of biomolecules derived from the agri-food chain waste, an approach that is well-suited to circular economy principles. We believe that this Special Issue, which highlights the advances and critical aspects of the synthesis, characterization, properties, and applications of bioactive polymer composites, will be helpful for researchers, academics, and even professionals in the packaging, cosmetics, and biomedical sectors.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
