Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biodegradable polymers and biopolymers have attracted a great deal of attention from the scientific community in the last decade, especially for the replacement of non-biodegradable and fossil-based materials. This is a crucial issue in the modern era, with particular regard to their medical applications, for which biodegradability allows the polymer to be included in physiological metabolic cycles with little or no interference with the normal healthy functioning of the human body. Their customizable synthesis and tailored functionalization allow for employing biodegradable polymers and biopolymers with a great variety of different approaches to solve an equally great variety of medical problems that span from tissue regeneration to cancer theranostics, often after being processed with novel and outstanding techniques such as additive manufacturing and bioprinting.

This Special Issue is therefore dedicated to the most recent studies on this topic, including several aspects related to the use of biodegradable polymers and biopolymers for medical applications. In particular, the main focus will be centered on, but not limited to:

  • Synthesis, functionalization, and/or chemical modification of biodegradable polymers or biopolymers for medical applications;
  • Application of biodegradable polymers or biopolymers for the encapsulation and delivery of drugs, nanomaterials, and/or bioactive components in medicine and bioimaging;
  • Additive manufacturing of biodegradable polymers or biopolymers for applications in tissue and bone engineering;
  • Bioprinting of biopolymer hydrogels for applications in tissue regeneration and engineering.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
