Special Issue "Global Paediatric Drug Development"

Dear colleagues,

The global scarcity of paediatric medicines that are acceptable and easily administered to children poses a major challenge to paediatric therapeutic practice and adherence. With the promise of better medicines for children finally placed firmly and squarely on the global agenda, the challenges now being addressed are related to effectively delivering on that promise. Optimising the development, global availability, and rational use of effective, safe, acceptable and affordable medicines addressing important child health needs has so far been elusive. The paucity of age-appropriate medicines means children are often either not treated or, based on anecdotal paediatric evidence, treated off label or off license with adult formulations. Off-label medicine use among children represents an important health issue as the effects and health risks may be unexpected. Efforts and the involvement of the national and international policy bodies globally are still needed to make the global development of medicines for children a priority. Emphasis also needs to be placed on "public–private partnerships" and their increasing influence and role in developing new paediatric products, e.g., for neglected tropical diseases.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together research publications from internationally reputed groups of researchers, academic experts, scientists and consultants engaged in paediatric formulation development from pharmaceutical companies, universities and hospitals in low–middle income countries (LMICs) and developed countries. The objective is to invite publications discussing a holistic global approach to paediatric research, in order to optimise and develop innovative solutions and technologies for future problems and present the limitations of medicines for children globally.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
