Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Animals have provided medicine and food to humans for centuries. Animal and human interactions have been documented since pre-historic times. The World Health Organization recognizes the biological resources utilized in traditional medicine as a source for obtaining new drugs for treating diseases affecting populations, especially in developing countries. Many animal species used in folk medicine remain to be scientifically studied. Quality control and chemical standardization of animal-based products should be performed to guarantee their safe use among the general population. This Special Issue will be focused on animals, including vertebrates and invertebrates, used for medicinal purposes in the following topics: (a) ethnozoological and ethnoveterinary studies using quantitative tools, b) chemical characterization of animal extracts, c) conservational studies, d) elucidation and isolation of animal-derived compounds and peptides, e) total synthesis and partial synthesis of animal-derived compounds, f) pharmacology and toxicology of animal extracts and animal-derived compounds, and g) studies of pharmaceutical formulations containing animal-derived products. The journal Pharmaceuticals invites experts to contribute to this Special Issue with reviews and original research articles focusing on the pharmacology, toxicology, analytical chemistry, pharmacy, and ethnozoology of animals with medicinal effects.
