The Special Issue “Potential Applications of Ionic Liquids in Drug Synthesis and Drug Delivery Systems” is now open for submissions.
The conversion of solid-state ionic or neutral pharmaceuticals into an ionic liquid state represents an exceptional solution to numerous problems in the pharmaceutical industry, such as polymorphism, a tendency to form solvates, low aqueous solubility, efficacy, and bioavailability, as well as adverse side effects. The ionic liquid strategy has the additional benefits of dual functionality and tunable permeability, allowing for the development of additional drug delivery pathways, and it can be used for repurposing old drugs (i.e., drugs abandoned by the pharma industry due to their drawbacks). However, to date, there has been little commercialization of these liquid-state drugs, with the only known clinical study being completed in June 2011 when an etodolac–lidocaine topical patch completed Phase III clinical trials (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01198834).
This Special Issue aims to cover the latest advances in the application of the ionic liquid strategy to various pharmaceuticals and to further advocate for the potential of these liquid-state drugs. We invite researchers to submit original research, communications, and review articles on the development of new liquid-state pharmaceuticals and their potential applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceuticals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
