We are pleased to announce the “Pathogens 2024 Best Paper Award” for research and review articles published in Pathogens from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022. One review and three research articles will each receive an award. The papers will be selected after a thorough evaluation by the journal Award Committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Lawrence S. Young.

Eligibility for the Award:
– Papers published in Pathogens from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022;
– Open to all career levels;
– Both regular and Special Issue submissions will be considered.

Selection Criteria:
The papers will be selected by the journal Award Committee according to the following criteria:
– Scientific merit and broad impact;
– Originality of the research objectives and/or the ideas presented;
– Creativity of the study design or uniqueness of the approaches and concepts;
– Clarity of presentation;
– Citations and downloads.

The Prize:
– One review award: CHF 500, and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Pathogens in 2024 after peer review.
– Three research article awards:

1. The first prize: CHF 500, and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Pathogens in 2024 after peer review;
2. The second prize: CHF 300, and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Pathogens in 2024 after peer review;
3. The third prize: CHF 200, and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Pathogens in 2024 after peer review;

– Each winner will also receive a certificate.

We are pleased to announce that Pathogens is now inviting nominations for the Pathogens 2023 Young Investigator Award. This prize will be given to two young investigators in recognition of their excellence in the field of pathogens and pathogen–host interactions. All nominations will be assessed by an Award Evaluation Committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Lawrence S. Young.

The prize:
– CHF 1000;
– Option to publish one paper free of charge in Pathogens after peer review before the end of 2023;
– An electronic certificate.

Eligibility and Requirements:
– Must have received their PhD no more than 10 years prior to 31 December 2023;
– Must have produced ground-breaking research and made a significant contribution to the advancement of pathogens and pathogen–host interactions;
– Candidates must be nominated by senior scientists.

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Pathogens 2022 Young Investigator Award are Dr. Marta Giovanetti and Dr. Carrie M. Long.

Dr. Marta Giovanetti is a Visitant Researcher at the National Reference Laboratory of Flavivirus in the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Brazil. Her research focuses on investigating the patterns of gene flow in pathogen populations, particularly the use of phylogenetics and phylogeography as tools to recreate and understand the determinants of viral outbreaks and how this information can be translated into public policy recommendations. She is currently the researcher with the largest number and most cited papers on COVID-19 in Brazil, and she was also awarded the “Researcher Productivity Fellowship” in consideration of her many publications and her dedication to Science by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. She has authored 141 articles published in international peer-review journals and 2 book chapters, and she also has been involved in the development of 3 pieces of open-source software for virus genotyping. Recently (October 2021), due to her commitment in the arbovirus surveillance research, she was awarded with the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science prize.

Dr. Carrie M. Long is an NIH Independent Research Scholar (IRS) in the Laboratory of Bacteriology at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a component of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Dr. Long obtained her Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 2016. Her research focuses on
C. burnetii pathogenesis, immunology, vaccinology, Q fever, animal modeling, guinea pigs, and bacterial vaccine development. Her scientific achievements are documented in 21 peer reviewed publications, including six first-author manuscripts in well respected journals. Dr. Long also contributed to the ongoing NIH COVID-19 research at RML, and she received an NIH Merit Award (2020) and an NIH Director’s Award (2021).

Each awardee will receive an honorarium of CHF 1000, an engraved plaque, and the opportunity to publish a paper free of charge in Pathogens following peer review before the end of 2022.

Pathogens 2021 Travel Awards Evaluation Committee

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Pathogens 2021 Young Investigator Awards are Professor Si Ming Man and Dr. Jasper Fuk-Woo Chan.

Professor Man is a Professor of the innate immunity and inflammasome lab at the Australian National University. Professor Man’s research interest is investigating the role of innate immunity in infectious diseases and cancer. Professor Man received his PhD in 2014 and has an outstanding publication record in peer-reviewed international journals. Professor Man’s Scopus Scientific Citations number is 4964 and his Hirsch index is 36.

Dr. Chan is a Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Chan’s research interest is using state-of-the-art technologies in molecular medicine to investigate virus–host interactions and improve the diagnosis, treatment, and control of emerging pathogens. Dr. Chan received his PhD in 2017 and has an outstanding publishing record, comprising over 230 publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Dr. Chan’s Scopus Scientific Citations number is 18,182 and his Hirsch index is 61.

As Editor-in-Chief of Pathogens, I am pleased to announce the two winners of the 2019 Travel Awards sponsored by Pathogens. These were granted to Dr. Krystyna Cwiklinski, a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Professor Dalton’s laboratory at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and to Dr. Rebecca Sumner, a Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher in the laboratory of Professor Greg Towers in the Division of Infection and Immunity, University College London. The awards consist of 800 Swiss Francs each,to support attendance at an academic conference of their choice in 2019.

Dr. Krystyna Cwiklinski is interested in the pathogenesis of parasitic infections and she uses a range of parasitology, molecular biology and bioinformatics tools and techniques to further our understanding of host-parasite interactions.

Dr. Rebecca Sumner’s research focuses on understanding how HIV-1 is detected by the innate immune system, particularly by cytoplasmic DNA sensors, and how the virus has evolved to evade this detection.

The awards consist of 800 Swiss Francs each, to support attendance at an academic conference of their choice in 2018.

Dr. Ana Raquel Pinho Freitas‘s main interests and expertise include molecular epidemiology and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on the genetic basis for transmission of antibiotic resistance and the adaptation of Enterococcus spp. and, to a lesser extent, Staphylococcus spp. to different hosts ( human, animal, food and the environment ).

Dr. Anna Conrad’s research focuses on mechanisms of oak resistance to Phytophthora ramorum infection and on the development of methods to predict resistance within natural populations.
