Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Obesity is a chronic, progressive, complex and relapsing disease, of essentially multifactorial origin. It represents a major public health concern and has medical, economic and psychosocial repercussions.

Long-term obesity management aims to improve the health outcomes and well-being of the patient. It requires the development of a short-, medium- and long-term therapeutic strategy promoting lifestyle and diet changes and increased physical activity. Therapeutic patient education (TPE) remains the cornerstone of patient care. This patient-centered approach takes into account the person with obesity as a whole and not only the body weight of the patient or their biomedical comorbidities.

The effectiveness of validated TPE programs in promoting weight loss in patients with obesity has been proven. These programs were shown to help patients modify their behavior, change their diet and practice more sustained physical activity. These programs are most effective when they address all of these elements at once and are carried out by multidisciplinary teams (i.e., doctors, dietitians, psychologists or psychiatrists, physiotherapists or other specialists in physical activity) trained in the field of obesity, in collaboration with primary care physicians.

The proposed topic aims to summarize the evidence of TPE-based approaches to obesity management, highlight the importance of personalized care in obesity and discuss the development of TPE programs in primary, secondary or tertiary settings. Both original articles and reviews are welcome.
