Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The digestive system plays a major role in our overall health and wellbeing. It breaks down foods into fats, proteins, carbohydrates, fibres, etc. that the body can absorb as nutrients and nourishment for the gut microbiome. Without a good digestive health, a range of problems can arise, such as stomach pain, bloating, heartburn, gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticular disease, constipation, diarrhoea, and a low-quality gut microbiome, resulting in dysbiosis and associated with many diseases, including depression. An intake of more fibre and/or of specific fibres may help in solving a range of problems. Currently, there is limited guidance beyond the total amount of fibre to be consumed, and insights into the role of the co-passengers of fibre and metabolites—such as polyphenols, SCFAs, and bile acids—are scarce. This Special Issue invites original research articles, short communications, and reviews (meta-analyses, and systematic and narrative reviews).
