Dr. Riccardo Frisenda Appointed Associate Editor of Nanomanufacturing

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Riccardo Frisenda has been appointed Associate Editor of Nanomanufacturing (ISSN: 2673-687X).

Dr. Riccardo Frisenda received his Ph.D. degree from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Delft, the Netherlands, in 2016. Currently, he is on the tenure track at Sapienza University, Rome, Italy. His main research interests include van der Waals 2D materials, molecular electronics, electronic and optical properties, semiconductor physics, and quantum transport.

 

 

 

 

 

The following is a short Q&A with Dr. Riccardo Frisenda, who shared his vision for the journal with us as well as his views on the research area and Open Access publishing:

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take on the role as its Associate Editor?

This relatively new journal has already shown enormous potential. Thanks to the open access policy, the fast and rigorous peer review process, and the very skillful editorial team, it has already attracted many renowned researchers and scientists working in the field of low-dimensional materials and devices. Moreover, the main topic of the journal, manufacturing on the nanoscale, is a very appealing one since it has both scientific and technological impact and encompasses applications that vary from disruptive novel laboratory-scale discoveries to large-scale industrial processes and production.

2. What is your vision for the journal?

Nanomanufacturing is focused on the fabrication of miniaturized devices, platforms, and materials, and their eventual scalability and industrial production. The articles published until now have already shown a large variety of materials covered, varying from one-dimensional carbon nanotubes to two-dimensional van der Waals materials, and also including different topics from metasurface optics to drug delivery to optoelectronics. The journal will benefit in the future from this multidisciplinary approach, and the good balance between original articles and reviews will continue to generate interest toward the journal in the scientific community.

3. What does the future of this field of research look like?

I see the future of the nanomanufacturing field as being particularly bright, with tremendous and disrupting discoveries awaiting us in the next years or decades. The progress achieved in the last 30 years in this field has already been astonishing. In fact, most of the electronic devices that shape our world (such as modern laptops and smartphones) would not be possible without the knowledge of manufacturing on the nanoscale.

In my opinion, two topics that will develop more and more in the years to come are the self-assembly of low-dimensional materials on the nanoscale to create robust novel devices on a large scale and the combination of nanofabrication methods with machine learning AI for more precise and rational control of the fabrication process.

4. What do you think of the development of Open Access in the publishing field?

I think that the open access policy is a very important and innovative strategy to allow a wide diffusion of scientific research. Before this practice, scientific knowledge was basically inaccessible to a vast range of people, from scientists working in developing countries to students or the general public. I believe that widespread access to scientific knowledge is an important requirement to build a better future and overcome many of the challenges that the human population faces nowadays. However, the open access policy should also be accompanied by a rigorous peer review process to guarantee high scientific standards of the discoveries reported. In this respect, Nanomanufacturing combines these factors egregiously, effectively allowing the simultaneous achievement of excellent qualitative and informative impact in the sectors of interest and reaching a broad audience without paywalls.
