Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Worldwide population aging is joined together by the increase of non-communicable chronic disease and, this unquestionable fact challenges us to explore and develop preventive actions based on nutraceuticals agents. Olive subproducts have been for decades a good candidate in both preventive and therapeutic actions again these diseases. In this regard, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the most recognized product from olive due to rich in natural antioxidants, such as polyphenols or tocopherols. In addition, olive leaves extract (OLE) has attracted increasing interest due to its beneficial properties improving glucose homeostasis disorders. Furthermore, the biological properties of antioxidants from olive products- derived are beneficial for cardiovascular health, anti-inflammatory effects, and anti-cancer effects have been well documented. The mechanisms involved in this beneficial effect are the induction of autophagy, epigenetic gene programs, mitochondrial biogenesis, among others.

Also, the food industry has been researching and developing various products based on olive leaves, antioxidant extract and, secondary products with bioactive compounds. However, olive products are a source of pollutants, such as olive mill wastewater, which offers a big problem to search for new green technologies strategies to favor the circular economy. The Special Issue of Molecules on “Olive products” aims to collect the research work and different points of view related to general uses of olive-derived products in the field of biomedical, nutraceutical, both cosmetic and food industry application.
