Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microalgae are unicellular microorganisms growing in aquatic systems, such as marine and freshwater. They can be eukariotes (green algae) or prokariotes (cyanobacteria). Recently, natural products from different biological resources are gaining attention due to their harmless, non-toxic, renewable, sustainable, and biodegradable properties. Microalgae are considered an attractive source since they are diverse, fast-growing, easily acclimatizing, highly bioavailable, easily cultivable, and could be successfully genetically manipulated. They are characterized by distinct and unique metabolic pathways, and can potentially produce specific secondary metabolites with biological activity which can either be exploited for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical purposes. Indeed, in addition to being a rich source of proteins whose content is higher than conventional sources such as meat, poultry and dairy products, their bioactive compounds showed beneficial effects in many pathological conditions, among them neurodegenerative diseases. However, more studies are needed before the potential commercial production of pharmaceuticals.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to publish original research papers or relevant updates of literature, on the beneficial effects of bioproducts of microalgae and their synthetic derivatives as nutraceuticals and in the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration with the aim of highlighting the diversity and innovation of this research field for novel therapeutic applications.

Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
