Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce the inaugural Microorganisms Special Issue of “Women in Virology”.

Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes both in the past and today have discouraged talented girls and women from pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) research. Presently, among the total number of researchers worldwide, fewer than 30% are women, and even fewer are in leading research positions. Our goal is to encourage a change in the traditional mindset, with the aim to move toward a more equal gender distribution by promoting gender equality in STEM careers.

Microorganisms is proud to support our efforts and to promote the scientific accomplishments of women scientists across all fields of virology in this Special Issue. The work presented here will highlight the outstanding research performed advancing basic, translational, and clinical aspects of virology.

We wish to publish reviews and research articles documenting current knowledge about viruses. We encourage manuscripts addressing aspects of molecular virology, virus–host cell interactions, human disease and pathogenesis, public health impact and epidemiology, animal model development, and the status of countermeasure development including vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics.

Please note that to be considered for this Special Issue, the first and/or last author should be a researcher identifying as a woman.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
