Dear Colleagues,
Vascular endothelium serves as a barrier between blood and tissues and acts as an endocrine organ in the body, actively regulating vascular tone, blood flow, and platelet function. Vascular endothelial cells (VECs) dysfunction contributes to pathological conditions, such as vascular inflammation, atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, cardiomyopathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and cancer. Numerous studies have suggested that VECs are involved in the regulation of metabolic processes from at least three aspects; these include 1) the fact that VECs directly control the trans-endothelial transport of metabolic macromolecules, such as glucose and fatty acids; 2) that VECs can secrete factors (Nitric oxide and Growth factors et al.) that act as paracrine or endocrine regulators for metabolic cells/tissues and are actively involved in the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis; and 3) the crosstalk between the metabolics of VECs and flow force. However, despite this, the precise mechanism of VECs' regulation of metabolic homeostasis remains poorly understood. Therefore, this Special Issue is devoted to the metabolic mechanism of vascular endothelium from diverse perspectives.
