Dear Colleagues,
Environmental stressors are not only disturbing our ecosystem but are also a significant underreported cause of cardiovascular (CV) diseases. Air pollutants are increasingly relevant stressors among others that are associated with increased mortality and morbidity from CV diseases. The complex and varied mechanisms through which pollutants cause CV toxic effects include inflammation, oxidative stress, and activation of neural reflex arcs.
The knowledge of the underlying mechanisms altering CV pathophysiology is still limited despite the better understanding of the CV consequences of pollution. This Special Issue of Medical Sciences aims to disseminate information about environmental pollutants as potential CV risk factors and to present recent advances in our understanding of the alteration in the structure and function of the heart due to pollution. Topics of interest include but are not limited to (1) explicit exploration of the background, epidemiology, direct and indirect effects of air pollution and other environmental modulators on the heart, including both short- and long-term consequences, (2) evidence-based strategies to reduce exposure to pollution, (3) epigenetic changes in the heart due to pollution, and (4) other emerging areas in the environmental cardiology field, including new models for preclinical studies.
