Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Orthognathic treatment is a proper solution for patients with dentofacial imbalances in which neither growth modification nor simple orthodontic camouflage are indicated, that require the repositioning of the jaw or/and the dentoalveolar segments.

As is very well-known, orthognathic treatment is an interdisciplinary approach that implies a critical collaboration between orthodontists and surgeons from the very beginning. In recent years, it registered dramatic progress and managed to correct many severe dentofacial problems that were once considered impossible to solve.

Even though the early form of treatment dates back more than 100 years ago, the greatest breakthroughs have happened in the last six decades: the sagittal split ramus osteotomy and the development of the LeFort I down fracture techniques. These two represent the beginning of the modern era of orthognathic surgery.

For this Special Issue, we would like to focus on:

  • Computer simulations and current computer prediction programs;
  • Esthetic and psychosocial considerations;
  • Special considerations in the planning of surgical treatment;
  • Presurgical orthodontics, presurgical records, and post-surgical orthodontics;
  • Timing of surgery;
  • Contemporary orthognathic surgery techniques;
  • Adjunctive facial procedures to improve soft tissue contours;
  • Post-surgical long term stability;
  • Orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders;
  • Orthognathic surgery and complications associated with orthognathic surgery.
