Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Customized nanomaterials have a wide range of medical applications in the areas of diagnostics, surveillance, and medication. Nanostructured biomaterials such as nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanosurfaces, nanowires, and nanocomposites are functionalized with peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, and drugs to be delivered to cells and organs. Unique physicochemical properties such as particle size, particle shape, surface area, solubility, polymorphism, surface charge, and hydrophobicity mean that nanomaterials must be considered when formulating a drug for effective drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and diagnostic applications. Nanomaterials’ distinctive optical and X-ray attenuation qualities are used for cancer phototherapy. Nanomaterials in the form of nanoprobes are used for multimodal imaging of malignancies by combining them with other functional nanoparticles. In recent years, trending biomaterials have enabled three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting, organ-on-a-chip applications, immunomodulation, extracellular vesicle research, vaccine delivery, and anti-viral performances. Nanomaterials include mechanically modulated biomaterials for improving biomaterial–tissue interactions, structural biomaterials functioning as scaffolds for creating tissue constructions, and nanobiomaterials permitting theranostics applications. In order to improve cellular internalization and interactions, nanobiomaterials provide an intriguing method for probing the nanoarchitecture of organs, tissues, and cells. Thus, instead of focusing on replacing damaged tissues, therapy now focuses on rebuilding cells and molecularly imitating physiological processes and biological structures. Implant applications that utilize nanobiomaterials include mechanical heart valves, intraocular lenses, hip, knee, and shoulder joints as well as dental implants. Additionally, they are employed in cell culture, diagnostic medical blood protein analysis, biotechnology application development, implants for controlling cow fertility, and diagnostic gene arrays. The Special Issue on “Functional Biomaterials and Nanobiomaterials for Biomedical Applications” will be a platform for the researchers to showcase their research works.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
