Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Marine organisms are interesting mines of biologically active secondary metabolites and are generally characterized by unique molecular structures, rich stereocenters and the peculiar presence of halogen atoms. Their organic synthesis is an exciting research activity. It is also interesting to confirm the molecular structures of isolated compounds, usually established relying only on spectral data. The asymmetric approach can define stereochemical assignments and absolute configurations of metabolites which are produced by nature in an enantiomerically pure form. Improvements in the synthetic strategy are achieved by convergent and biomimetic approaches, by selective methodologies without requiring additional steps of protective groups and by ecofriendly procedures that include microwave irradiation and ultrasound technique, a solid phase process, solvent-free conditions and biocatalysis. An intrinsic feature of secondary metabolites is their very low abundance in natural sources. Therefore, a synthesis capable of producing biologically active marine substances on a large scale for extensive bioassays and therapy represents a valid solution. Furthermore, synthesis can provide access to unnatural analogues, showing improved properties for their evaluation as potential drugs.

This Special Issue aims to provide selected contributions in the form of original research articles, review articles and short communications that discuss advances in all aspects related to the total synthesis of marine natural products and analogues.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • New total synthesis of marine metabolites and related structures;
  • Structural confirmation / revision by total synthesis;
  • Asymmetric synthesis and catalysis;
  • Involvement of environmentally friendly processes;
  • Novel synthetic methodologies and improvements;
  • Marine natural product synthesis in medicinal chemistry;
  • Structure-activity relationship (SAR) study;
  • Overview of a relevant type of reaction in the synthesis of marine metabolites;
  • Critical overview of all synthetic strategies reported for a metabolite or a class of metabolites;
  • Future perspectives for marine metabolite synthesis.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Marine Drugs is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
