Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a well-known risk factor with an unfavorable prognosis in critically ill patients, who may require blood purification such as hemodialysis or CRRT. In recent decades, the concept of blood purification is no longer restricted to the field of renal replacement therapy but rather a set of comprehensive treatments for multiple organ dysfunction as well as the removal of pathogenic substances from blood circulation. Classical CRRT in combination with hybrid techniques such as hemoperfusion, blood adsorption, plasmapheresis, and DPMAS has been widely applied in various conditions including sepsis, liver failure, hyperlipidemia, autoimmune disease crisis, etc. In addition, extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) on the platform of the CRRT machine has also gained ground as an alternative respiratory support during hypercapnia. The application and optimization of critical care blood purification in AKI and beyond is the focus of research.
