Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Anthropogenic impacts and climate change represent the main threats to biodiversity and their effects have a greater resonance in marine coastal areas, which are the ultimate receiver of pollutants, nutrients, organic matter and litter. Alterations in the state of environmental quality can have negative effects on the normal physiology of the aquatic organisms. Many of these organisms are highly sensitive to any kind of environmental change, thus representing suitable bioindicators for aquatic ecosystem monitoring. When studying the effects of pollution in marine ecosystems, understanding how toxic effects appear and how the organisms readily metabolize, detoxify and accumulate contaminants is essential to understanding ecological vulnerability and possible recovery.

Also, from a climate change perspective, global warming and acidification effects have been recognized as negatively impacting the ecology and physiology of the organisms.

Interacting pollution and climate change stressors leads to additive, synergistic, or antagonistic impacts on marine organisms. Understanding the organism’s response at metabolic level and which compounds play important roles in various physiological activities is one of the most interesting challenges in environmental science.

The aim of this Special Issue is to outline the state of the art and provide further insight into the physiological responses and adaptive strategy of target organisms, especially fish. To this end, experimental studies focused on the following topics are particularly welcome:

  • Traditional and novel experimental approaches in fish physiology, highlighting delimitations and advantages;
  • organisms’s response at physiological, biochemical, cellular and molecular level;
  • adverse effects of pollutants on fish physiology of different species and definite physiological parameters for particular fish species;
  • novel understanding of the physiology in target and non-target fish

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
