Ophthalmology
A section of Journal of Clinical Medicine (ISSN 2077-0383).
Section Information
The eye is a sensory organ, and the capacity for sight is derived from the neuroectoderm. The eye has many important components including the cornea, iris, trabecular meshwork, lens, vitreous chamber, sclera, neural retina, retinal pigment epithelium, choroid, and optic nerve. These structures serve different functions, from providing a barrier to environmental elements to our ability to see. The function of the retina, located at the posterior portion of the eye (akin to the lens in a camera), contains at least 60 cell types, including the photoreceptors (rods and cones), which turn light into electrical signals and transmit these signals through the optic nerve to the brain. The cornea and lens help to accurately focus the light on the retina. Aging and disease can affect anyone of these structures thus diminishing our ability to see. Some of the factors that influence our ability to see are treatable, such as cataract surgery for the aging, while others are not. Visual impairment can be influenced by genetics, trauma, access to eye care, and diet, etc. Our vision can also be influenced in some cases by systemic disease. Understanding the disease mechanisms which govern the function of these ocular structures will better help pinpoint disease causality and hence the appropriate preventative and therapeutic targets. We sincerely welcome your submission to Journal of Clinical Medicine. We are particularly interested in translational findings that relate to the eye in health and disease.
