Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Artificial intelligence (AI) is assuming an ever-increasing role and is currently being applied in the biomedical field. It is presumable that it will play a leading role in the future of medicine. Machine learning (ML) represents one of the most exciting research fields in AI. However, ML algorithms can use a large amount of data and extract meaningful results from it, thus, giving the computer the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed to do so. ML can help to classify patients, predict future outcomes, and even personalize patient treatment. Specifically, in the field of immune-mediated diseases, the application of AI can support the diagnosis of systemic immune-mediated diseases, which include, among others, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease and undifferentiated connective tissue disease.
It is foreseeable that the use of AI could allow the early prediction of the involvement of viscera (lungs, heart, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, etc.). For example, as already demonstrated, the application of AI in patients with systemic sclerosis can lead to the early detection of interstitial lung disease, ILD, anticipating the functional signs shown by spirometry and pH impedancemetry, allowing us to broaden the use of high-definition chest CT required in international guidelines.
This Special Issue aims to collect and analyze the most recent scientific evidence in support of AI in the diagnosis of systemic immune-mediated diseases. Both review and research papers are welcome. Please note that pure clinical or model studies are unsuitable for this journal, but clinical submissions with biomolecular studies are welcome.
