Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Obesity, said to be the pandemic of the XXI century, poses one of the greatest fundamental public health problems and is projected to escalate over time. The most concerning and urgent aspect of obesity is its prevalence in children. Obesity is diagnosed when the calculated BMI value (Body Mass Index) is above the 97th percentile for age and gender. According to the WHO, 38 million children under the age of five were classed as overweight or obese in 2019. As stated by the latest published research in our place of investigation, the city of Szczecin, this problem concerns 8.6% of children aged 8–10 years. Excessive body weight increases the risk of numerous clinical consequences: diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, kidney disorders, some cancers, emotional problems and many others. In this issue of the journal you will find reports on the potential causative factors, complications and ways to prevent obesity in children.
