Dear Colleagues,

The massive use of plastics and their composites for a multitude of applications raises a warning about the impact of microplastics and nanoplastics on the environment. Structural rupture of polymeric material, simple wear by abrasion, and weathering effects or planned comminution are some of the reasons for the existence of microplastics and nanoplastics in the environment. The dimensions of the materials minimize the visual and aesthetic appeal of their removal; however, their transport is easier and their removal more difficult than those of plastics with dimensions above this scale of magnitude. The effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the environment are still poorly studied. The fragmentation of any particle greatly expands its surface, leading to new behaviors of materials of nanometric dimensions that need to be understood. The modification of surface energy generates several effects on the adsorptive capacity of these materials. All ecosystems and environmental compartments are susceptible to plastic pollution. Knowledge of the distribution of nanoplastics and microplastics in the environment is necessary, while identification of the type of plastic is crucial for spatiotemporal knowledge of the polluting source. Ingestion or inhalation of these materials can compromise living beings, and the transport of microorganisms on the surface of these materials can amplify unwanted actions.
