Integrated Impact of Circular Economy, Industry 4.0, and Lean Manufacturing on Sustainability Performance of Manufacturing Firms

In today’s business environment, contributions made by the manufacturing sector to the economy and social development is evident. With a focus on long-term development, the manufacturing sector has adopted advanced operating strategies, such as lean manufacturing, industry 4.0, and green practices in an integrated manner. The integrated impact of circular economy, industry 4.0, and lean manufacturing on sustainability performance has not been adequately addressed and investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the integrated impact of circular economy, industry 4.0, and lean manufacturing on the sustainability performance of organizations in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected through a questionnaire-based survey as a primary data instrument. A total of 486 organizations have responded to the survey within the timeframe. Moreover, the structural equation modeling method is utilized for data analysis through SmartPLS tool for the developed hypotheses of the research. The findings highlight the positive impact of circular economy on the sustainability of the organizations. Furthermore, the results indicate that industry 4.0 and lean manufacturing have positive mediating impacts as enablers for the successful implementation of circular economy toward the sustainable performance of organizations in Saudi Arabia. The study finding confirms that lean manufacturing is a substantial mediating variable that is essential for the successful implementation of industry 4.0 technologies. Moreover, the study indicates the recognition and acknowledgment of companies on circular economy principles, industry 4.0 technologies, and lean manufacturing tools to achieve the desired sustainability. Green innovation is an important strategy in seeking sustainable competitive advantages. This paper investigates the impact of enterprise digitization on green innovation and its mechanisms. We find that enterprise digital transformation has a significant effect on the promotion of green innovation. This positive effect mainly stems from the advantage of resource reallocation generated by enterprise digitalization that can alleviate financing constraints and raise risk-taking levels. Furthermore, the level of economic development strengthens the impact of enterprise digitization on green innovation, and the positive relationship between enterprise digitization and green innovation is stronger in regions with stronger environmental regulation and higher intellectual property protection, as well as in state-owned and heavily polluting enterprises. Digitization can optimize resource utilization, strengthen the capacity of green innovation in pollution reduction and promote the clean production of enterprises. Our results show that enterprise digitization plays a positive role in innovation activities. Dual-Channel Pricing Decisions for Product Recycling in Green Supply Chain Operations: Considering the Impact of Consumer Loss Aversion

With the vigorous rise of online third-party recycling platforms, dual-channel recycling has become the primary recycling mode in the reverse supply chain (RSC). However, as the main body of recycling, consumers have a significant impact on the recycling process, and their behavioral preferences are rarely considered in the pricing decision of the reverse recycling supply chain. Based on the dual-channel RSC, this paper considers the competition among channels. It introduces the loss aversion behavior preference of consumers to establish a dual-channel RSC composed of remanufacturers and online and offline recyclers. This study aims to analyze the impact of consumers’ loss aversion behavior on the recycling pricing and profit of each node in the green RSC and discuss the decision of recyclers under consumers’ loss aversion behavior. The results show that the deeper consumers’ aversion to the loss of recycling price, the lower the recycling price of dual-channel recyclers will be, which will be more conducive to the increase in the profit of online recyclers. However, the profit of remanufacturers will be reduced, and the total amount of recycling will decline. This paper considers the impact of consumer loss aversion behavior on dual-channel reverse supply chain pricing decisions based on prospect theory. It provides references for chain members to set recycling prices to increase people’s enthusiasm for recycling and the amount of recycled scrap, contributes to the cause of resource conservation and environmental protection, and improves the economic efficiency of recycling enterprises. The resource and environmental constraints on China’s economic development have become more prominent; thus there is an urgent need for enterprises to achieve green innovation transformation to promote high-quality economic development. We obtained data on 655 on Chinese A-share companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2010 to 2020, a total of 7205 samples, and explored the influencing mechanism of environmental regulation on corporate green innovation and the moderating mechanism of CSR disclosure by constructing a nonlinear fixed-effect regression model. The results showed: (1) the overall level of green innovation of listed companies is low, and the relationship between environmental regulation and enterprise green innovation presents the U-shaped characteristic of changing from cost effect to innovation compensation effect; (2) non-state-owned enterprises have less tolerance and more sensitive response to environmental regulation than state-owned enterprises; (3) social responsibility information disclosure has a positive regulatory effect on environmental regulation and enterprise green innovation, and non-state-owned enterprises are more significant. It provides references for the government to adjust the intensity of environmental regulation, and, meanwhile, for enterprises to improve the level of environmental protection and the CSR disclosure, and enhance the green innovation ability of enterprises in emerging market. Green innovation has become one of the most important approaches to achieving sustainable development in modern business. Top management team (TMT)’s overseas experience, as one type of unique resources, constitutes the cognitive basis of the team and thus influences firms’ strategic decision-making. Based on the upper echelon theory, this study aims to investigate the effect of TMT’s overseas experiences on green innovation performances. By utilizing a panel dataset of Chinese listed firms, this study shows that TMTs’ overseas experience indeed promotes firms’ green innovation performance and that both firms’ digital transformation and regions’ digital economy development positively moderate the relationship between TMTs’ overseas experience and green innovation. These findings not only help managers better organize the TMT and green innovation strategy but also draw policymakers’ attention to the importance of the digital economy and sustainable development. In the context of carbon peak and carbon neutral policies, low-carbon construction has been the focus of most countries worldwide. As one of the most effective ways to achieve green construction, many countries have launched low-carbon policies to promote the development of prefabrication. However, the effectiveness and influencing factors of low-carbon policies on prefabrication need to be further verified under the dynamic game between the government and the construction enterprise. Therefore, this study considered subsidy and carbon tax policies and developed an evolutionary game model to promote the development of the prefabricated construction market. The evolutionary stable strategy of the government and construction enterprise under different scenarios was obtained. Subsequently, a numerical analysis was conducted to further investigate the impact of the key factors on the stable strategy. The results showed that an appropriate hybrid policy of subsidies and taxes could positively promote the prefabrication implementation of the construction enterprise. The government should adopt an appropriate policy intensity according to the maturity of the market. This study can provide effective guidance and practical enlightenment for the government to achieve low-carbon, green, and sustainable construction. Full article

Environmental pollution is an inevitable primary responsibility in the production and management of enterprises, and it is the most severe challenge to achieving green production and sustainable development. Environmental pollution liability insurance (EPLI) can transfer corporate pollution liability to insurance companies, which affects corporate performance to a certain extent. However, the influencing factors of enterprise performance are complex, and EPLI also involves multiple subjects, so the impact of EPLI on enterprise performance is also complex. At first, this paper analyzes the possible relationship between EPLI and corporate performance based on the existing literature; subsequently, based on the list of EPLI-insured companies in 2014 and 2015 published by China’s environmental protection department as a sample, this paper uses a fixed-effects model to conduct an empirical analysis, and the mediating role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) was then examined; finally, heterogeneity analysis of the initial conclusions was conducted. The following conclusions are drawn: firstly, there is a significant negative correlation between EPLI and corporate performance. Secondly, CSR played a mediating role in the effect of EPLI on corporate performance; that is, EPLI inhibited the rise of corporate performance by affecting CSR. Thirdly, the impact of EPLI on corporate performance is heterogeneous in terms of equity nature, corporate pollution level and marketization degree. The results of this paper enrich the economic impact theory of EPLI and have specific practical value for enterprise management and policymakers in the background of the green economy. Full article

Enterprise green innovation behavior is necessary for the transformation of enterprises and the enhancement of green development. However, the inconsistency of existing studies on the behavioral mechanism has not been effectively addressed. The purpose of this paper is to reveal a mechanism for enterprise green innovation behavior, taking the coevolutionary theory. Based on the coevolution theory model, this study screened 16 high-quality studies covering 11 countries and regions with 5471 independent samples from six major databases (Web of Science Core Collection (SCIE & SSCI), Science Direct, Springer Link, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Sage journals). The included literature was coded and tested. Meta-analysis was used to clarify the direction and intensity of the behavioral antecedent and outcome variables to explore the mechanism of enterprise green innovation behavior. Furthermore, this study also explores the moderating effect of regional heterogeneity on behavior. The results are as follows: (1) The economic, political, social, and technological environments significantly and positively influence enterprise green innovation behavior. (2) Enterprises’ green innovation behavior significantly and positively influences environmental performance. (3) Regional heterogeneity can moderate the effects of enterprise green innovation behavior and antecedent and consequence variables. Then, this study proposes countermeasures based on government and enterprise perspectives. This study provides both theoretical and empirical referents for enterprises to better adopt green innovation behaviors and enhance their green development. Full article
