Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Substance use and other addictive behaviors are a public health problem. Despite continuous attempts to reduce addictive behaviors, they continue to be strikingly prevalent. While tobacco and alcohol consumption seem to be on a downward trend, the rise of other substances, such as electronic cigarettes or energy drinks, as well as behavioral addictions, such as gambling or Internet gaming, are on an upward trend, which has a meaningful impact on public health.

All of this indicates the need to develop assessment tools, as well as preventive actions and treatment programs, based on scientific evidence.

This Special Issue in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is dedicated to making substantial contributions to knowledge in the understanding, assessment, prevention and treatment of addictive behaviors. This issue will include a wide range of topics, including: (1) the risks and protective factors of addictive behaviors and substance use, where biological, psychological and contextual variables are included; (2) the development of measurement scales; and (3) evaluation of the effectiveness of treatments and prevention programs aimed at addictive behaviors.
