Dear Colleagues,
The traditional system of land-use in Europe has undergone a historical transformation. This fact, together with the decline in population has led to an unknown situation, because if the trend continues, great areas are facing a total depopulation. In this context, achieving sustainable forest management (SFM) as a vital process and ensure sustainability and environmental resilience are complex problems. The absence of management of many forests emphasizes the problem because the forests cover about 40% only of the European Union’s and the forestry sector provides more than 3.5 million jobs. Also, it could increase risk of forest fires, as well as diseases and pests, all marked by the current climate change scenario. The 2013 EU Forest Strategy set a framework in order to coordinate the forest-related policy issues, and to ensure their contribution to the EU's objectives. The principles are sustainable forest management, multifunctionality of the forests, resource efficiency, and forest responsibility. In 2018, it was reviewed, and an assessment of the implemented actions took place, as well as, of progress towards the 2020 goals. The current situation would be improved by a forestry aimed at SFM to achieve an aggregate value of timber production and other products that would allow for a land-use compatible with the conservation. For this new Topical Series on “Forest Sustainable Management in Europe” to Forests journal, topics of interest include actions, challenges, and applications of sustainable management across the miscellaneous European forests (both hardwood forests and conifer forests, and also mixed forests). Hope this new series will promote knowledge on sustainable management, and provide important data for the management and conservation of European forests.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
