Dear Colleagues,
The term sustainability has been intrinsically linked to forest management since the 18th century, when von Carlowitz used this concept for the first time within the context of the so-called “normal forest”. Since then, this concept has been assumed and developed in Forestry Science over the centuries. It has considerably evolved in the last few years, shifting from the initial monofunctionality perspective toward a multifunctionality context, including different forest ecosystem services linked to forestry systems.
Currently, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda provide us with a set of indicators for dealing with the sustainable management of the environment and its embedded resources. Within this orientation, forests have been recognized as a key element for the achievement of the general sustainability goal. In short, forest management plans should promote these SDGs at their different scales by developing specific indicators, objectives, and implementing methodologies to monitor their evolution over time.
The integration of these new SDGs in forest management is a timely and significant challenge, demanding from current science and technology the development of sound analytical frameworks at different spatial and temporal scales. A modern vision of sustainability needs to embrace new ecosystem services involved in the process and how different stakeholders or social groups perceive the relative importance of the different criteria and indicators included in the SDG.
This Special Issue aims to collect research papers in the theoretical and applied fields dealing with the integration of the different SDGs from a forest management perspective, with the help of several analytical methodologies. We especially welcome papers that simultaneously integrate indicators belonging to diverse SDGs and addressing ecosystem services under a forest management umbrella.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
