Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Energy-aware systems in health automation are emerging as a new and inter-disciplinary research field. We are witnessing a rapid development of advanced application (by using information, communications, automation, and networking technologies) to realize smart control systems in several smart systems regarding healthcare. Smart systems are critical in driving innovations in the field of medical technology, as they provide the basis for information-based health maintenance, and for guaranteeing an efficient management of medical data and information processes (i.e., big data management in smart systems and smart networks). Moreover, the integration of low-power micro-sensors and micro-actuators will provide a technological healthcare for better treatment and caretaking of patients in the hospital and at home. The seamless linking of microsystems to a telemetric and telediagnostic infrastructure will significantly reduce response time, increase the effectiveness of treatments, and simultaneously contribute to reducing public healthcare costs. However, investigations about the communication techniques, computational models, and smart self-decisioning approaches are needed in terms of energy consumption for automation systems. They will have a key role in the wireless or remote management of control applications, especially in the case of dynamic and shared environments with the human-beings. A variety of recent advanced technologies and approaches play important roles, exploiting innovative technologies and solutions and/or optimization methods. They allow higher levels of adaptability and flexibility in energy-aware medical systems. This Special Issue solicits high-quality unpublished work on recent advances in energy-aware smart systems in healthcare. The main topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  • Green Communication architectures and technologies for medical automation systems;
  • Sustainable design and solutions for green automation systems for healthcare;
  • System-on-chip vs. network on-chip architectures in green automation systems for medical application;
  • Energy-efficient communications and management in medical automation applications;
  • Big data and data management for energy-aware medical automation scenarios;
  • Energy systems in telemedicine application and patient mobility management;
  • Energy-aware solutions for authentication security and privacy in health;
  • Test-bed, prototype, and practical systems for green communication in medical automation use cases.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
