Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Internet of Things (IoT), with the help of other technologies, such as edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G, is driving a significant shift to support the emerging IoT-related applications with specific requirements (e.g., real-time processing of a high volume of data) with better flexibility and efficiency. In this regard, AI subdomains, such as data analytics and learning techniques, play an important role in supporting the emerging IoT-related applications.  AI integrated with IoT heralds the era of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). Although AIoT could provide some noticeable opportunities and benefits (e.g., enhancing data management and analytics), integrating AI with IoT brings some challenges and concerns. For example, AI functions traditionally require centralized data collection and processing. However, centralized data collection and processing may not be feasible for modern AIoT-related applications because of some features such as the high volume of generated data, scalable and distributed data sources, high scalability of networks and data privacy concerns.

This Special Issue is designed to highlight the important challenges facing AIoT and their potential solutions. It also aims to introduce emerging AIoT-related applications and presents recent progress in the AIoT research domain, ranging from the use of AI (e.g., proposing lightweight AI units) to various systems (e.g., proposing more powerful AIoT end devices) and architecture efficiency (e.g., proposing new AI deployment methods for AIoT architecture).

The topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AIoT-related applications and architectures;
  • AIoT challenges and their potential solutions;
  • AI techniques for supporting AIoT;
  • AI and end and edge devices;
  • AIoT implementation: platforms and tools;
  • AIoT and other technologies (e.g., 5G/6G and Edge computing).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
