Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Collaboration between artificial systems is an up-and-coming line of research in which different types of systems work together to obtain a benefit in terms of performance and results.
There is a wide range of applications in which these systems can be used: swarm intelligence, collaborative work, optimization, routing problem solving, education, data analysis, blockchain, robotics, etc. Therefore, the projection of this type of systems has great potential and applicability in a multitude of current and future lines of work.
The main objective of this Special Issue is to attract high-quality papers detailing recent research, as well as review articles on recent developments in collaborative artificial systems. Relevant topics for this Special Issue may include (but are not limited to):
- Distributed intelligent systems;

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Title: Management of data versions and variants in collaborative environments

Abstract: In collaborative work, it is common for participants to begin from the same set of data and in the course of the work parallelize their activities, requiring a divergence of data with different variants. Once activities are completed, these variants converge again, merging changes into a single copy of working data. In addition, modifications made to the data by users of a collaborative system make the tracking of these changes highly desirable, allowing for control over the produced versions.
In programming environments, these needs have long been met by distributed version control systems like Git, which allow both the creation and merging of branches, as well as version tracking. In contrast, in groupware development the inclusion of these features implies a high cost with specific and non-reusable solutions across applications.
This paper presents a conceptual framework for version and variant data management in collaborative environments. This framework is based on design principles that allow the coexistence of multiple data variants, they’re merging with conflict resolution support, and the traceability of versions. The implications of this framework for the practice of CSCW are discussed, including how it can facilitate collaboration and improve the efficiency of team work.
