Freshwater Biodiversity
A section of Diversity (ISSN 1424-2818).
Section Information
Freshwater ecosystems cover a tiny percentage of the Earth’s surface but are essential to all living organisms and represent a surprisingly large fraction of global biodiversity. They are also strongly impacted by humans as they constitute the basis of our essential needs, providing water, energy and food. It is therefore vital that these ecosystems and their biodiversity are preserved. Diversity seeks to publish papers describing this biodiversity (ranging from molecules to species and from unicellulars to vertebrates) across space and time and to identify the processes shaping these patterns in freshwater ecosystems.
