State-of-the-Art Research on Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

Dear Colleagues,

Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics are dental specialties in which it is imperative to provide an early diagnosis to choose the most accurate treatment among the various available options. Patients with dentoskeletal malocclusions are often children, adolescents, or fragile subjects, and thus, it is preferable to find noninvasive clinical, radiological, and biochemical methodologies for the diagnostic process. Nowadays, the number of treatment alternatives is also increasing thanks to new devices and advanced technologies. The use of monitoring tools is also improving patients’ compliance with removable appliances and satisfaction with the results. In this perspective, research in recent years has also focused on oral-health-related quality of life and patient-reported outcomes during and after orthodontic therapy. Finally, integration of those assessments with artificial intelligence could greatly improve the sensitivity and specificity of oral diagnostics, as well as the evaluation of treatment prognosis.

Thus, the general aim of this Special Issue is to check the current state of the art of research in these dental fields, shaping the business of orthodontics today, tomorrow, and in the years to come.

We are delighted to call for the collection of original research articles (trials, cohort studies, case-control, and cross-sectional studies), high-quality case series, reviews (narrative, comprehensive or systematic reviews, and meta-analyses), and surveys, investigating new perspectives in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring processes in orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics, and orofacial pain, using a wide array of techniques with the help of different novel tools.

The Special Issue has been formulated to publish critical evaluations of both clinical and experimental research, prioritizing the studies with innovative approaches, and original outcomes useful for the whole community.
