Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The urgent demands to meet the world's net zero goals facilitate the development of photovoltaic (PV) technologies. Among many solar cells, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted significant attention, due to their low cost and decent power-conversion efficiency (PCE). Indeed, the PCE of single-junction and multi-junction PSCs has reached 25.7% and 31.3%, respectively, rivalling the conventional silicon cells. However, uncertainties and scientific challenges remain in PSC research and commercialization. For instance, the scalable fabrication of PSCs remains as one major problem in MW- and GW-scale production lines, i.e., the PCE of PSCs decreases rapidly with a larger cell/module area. Moreover, the unsatisfied moisture-, thermal- and light-induced instabilities in these PSCs significantly restrict their practical applications. Therefore, intensive efforts are still required to resolve these issues and enable perovskite PVs to enter the market.

This Special Issue focuses on recent achievements and progress in perovskite PV investigations. We would like to invite you to submit your original research articles, reviews, and perspectives to this Special Issue.

Tremendous efforts have been devoted to facilitating the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in the past decade. However, the influence of solvent vapor atmosphere on PSC device performance during its fabrication still lacks related investigations. Here, by using three commonly employed solvent vapors during the perovskite annealing process, i.e., isopropanol, chlorobenzene and dimethylformamide, we reveal the effects of atmosphere on related perovskite film properties and device performance. The results indicate that perovskite films prepared under these external solvent vapors exhibit distinct crystalline phases, morphologies and optical properties from films under normal conditions (nitrogen gas), resulting in a significant drop in power conversion efficiency from the initial 20.01% to the lowest of only ~15%. Our work highlights the importance of atmospheric effects in preparing efficient PSCs for scalable fabrication and commercialization. Full article

Transmission electron microscope (TEM) is thought as one powerful tool to imaging the atomic-level structure of organic inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) materials, which provides valuable and essential guidance toward high performance OIHP-related devices. However, these OIHPs exhibit poor electron beam stability, severely limiting their practical applications in TEM. Here in this article, the application of TEM to obtain atomic-scale image of OIHPs, main obstacles in identifying the degradation product and future prospects of TEM in the characterization of OIHP materials are reviewed and presented. Three potential strategies (sample protection, low temperature technology, and low-dose technologies) are also proposed to overcome the current drawback of TEM technology. Full article
