Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue comprises selected papers from the Proceedings of the Second Coatings and Interfaces Web Conference (CIWC2020), held from 15–31 May 2020, on ciwc2020.sciforum.net, an online platform for hosting scholarly e-conferences and discussion groups.

Through CIWC2020, we aim to promote and advance the exciting and rapidly changing field of surfaces, coatings, and interfaces. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Biocoating and biomaterial surfaces and interfaces;
  • Coatings and surfaces for mitigating wear, erosion, and corrosion;
  • Advances in high temperature coatings and surfaces;
  • Hybrid surface coatings and process;
  • Applications of pavement surface coatings;
  • Coatings, surfaces, and interfaces for food safety and preservation;
  • Deposition and modification on surfaces;
  • Advances in coatings and surface characterization.

Selected papers that have attracted the most interest on the web, or that provided a particularly innovative contribution, have been gathered for publication. These papers have been subjected to peer review, and are published with the aim of a rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications. We hope this Conference Series will grow rapidly in the future, and become recognized as a new way and venue by which to present new developments related to the field of coatings and interfaces.

This paper presents impedance measurements of ferroelectric structures involving lead-free oxide and polymer-oxide composite coatings for sensing and energy harvesting applications. Three different ferroelectric materials grown by conventional microfabrication technologies on solid or flexible substrates are investigated for their basic resonant characteristics. Equivalent electrical circuit models are applied to all cases to explain the electrical behavior of the structures, according to the materials type and thickness. The analytical results show good agreement with the experiments carried out on a basic types of excited thin-film piezoelectric transducers. Additionally, temperature and frequency dependences of the dielectric permittivity and losses are measured for the polymer-oxide composite device in relation with the surface morphology before and after introduction of the polymer to the functional film. In this paper, the surface properties of bare and film-covered gallium nitride (GaN) in wurtzite form, (0001) oriented, are summarized. Thin films of several elements—manganese, nickel, palladium, arsenic, and antimony—were formed by the physical vapor deposition method. The results of the bare surfaces, as well as the thin film/GaN(0001) phase boundaries presented, were characterized by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS, UPS). Basic information on the electronic properties of GaN(0001) surfaces are shown. Different behaviors of the thin films, after postdeposition annealing in ultrahigh vacuum conditions such as surface alloying and subsurface dissolving and desorbing, were found. The metal films formed surface alloys with gallium (MnGa, NiGa, PdGa), while the semimetal (As, Sb) layers easily evaporate from the GaN(0001) surface. However, the layer in direct contact with the substrate could react with it, modifying the surface properties of GaN(0001). Full article

Thickness dramatically affects the functionality of coatings. Accordingly, the techniques in use to determine the thickness are of utmost importance for coatings research and technology. In this review, we analyse some of the most appropriate methods for determining the thickness of metallic coatings. In doing so, we classify the techniques into two categories: (i) destructive and (ii) non-destructive. We report on the peculiarity and accuracy of each of these methods with a focus on the pros and cons. The manuscript also covers practical issues, such as the complexity of the procedure and the time required to obtain results. While the analysis focuses most on metal coatings, many methods are also applicable to films of other materials. Full article
