Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Vitamin D is a precursor of a potent steroid hormone, calcitriol, which is known to regulate phospho-calcic metabolism. Its receptor, VDR, is present in many cell types; consequently, vitamin D is now studied for a wide range of physiologic effects, such as muscle cell differentiation, immune cell modulation, and cancer cell proliferation. It was found that vitamin D may play a key role in the prevention and treatment of many extra-skeletal diseases, such as cancer. However, it remains unclear whether supplementation with vitamin D reduces the risk of cancer. If the anti-proliferative effects of vitamin D are often demonstrated in vitro, in vivo studies are more controversial and data from randomized trials are limited. This Special Issue will highlight the role of vitamin D in cancer in all its diversity (cancer cell proliferation, immune surveillance, cachexia, etc.), covering both fundamental and more (pre)clinical aspects.
