Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

we are pleased to announce the launch of a Special Issue for the journal Brain Sciences and devoted to the investigation of cognitive deficits in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorder of young and middle-aged adults, worldwide. Although the degeneration mainly affects patients’ motor domain, cognitive symptoms have been repeatedly reported too; in addition, there is clear evidence that in a significant proportion of patients ALS and frontotemporal dementia overlap pathologically, clinically and radiologically.

Cognitive impairment has a tremendous impact on patients’ condition and is strongly associated with a poorer quality of life in both the patients and caregivers. Thus, cognitive deficits are gaining attention as an important clinical feature to be investigated at the early stages of the condition already.

This Special Issue aims to attract empirical articles investigating the contribution of genetics, neuropsychology and neuroimaging in fostering our understanding of cognitive deficits in ALS. Multidisciplinary studies investigating cognitive deficits from multiple points of view (i.e., genetics, neuropsychology and/or neuroimaging) are strongly encouraged. Review articles on the current state-of-the -art are also welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribution of genetics in clarifying the cognitive picture of familial ALS;
  • Neuropsychological studies including large samples of patients;
  • Neuropsychological studies including a careful monitoring of cognitive symptoms over time;
  • Structural, functional and/or optical imaging studies of cognitive deficits in ALS;
  • Studies investigating the impact of cognitive deficits on patients’ and caregivers’ quality of life;
  • Multidisciplinary studies that investigate the relationship between genetic and neurobiological aspects, and their impact on the presence of cognitive deficits.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Brain Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
