Bioinspired Architecture and Climatisation

The building and construction sector is responsible for a high proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions. Some of the greatest challenges for today’s architecture are multifunctionality and sustainability. Thus, any approach to bio-inspired architecture, engineering, and construction should make a positive contribution to reducing the sector’s carbon footprint. The materials, structures, surfaces, and buildings of organisms are highly relevant for architecture and climatisation. The main technology areas in which biological solutions to problems in the architecture can be applied are the following: (1) new materials, (2) constructions, (3) surfaces, (4) adhesives and bonding technology, (5) optics and photonics, and (6) energy harvesting. We invite designers, planners, architects, urban ecologists, and scientists to contribute to a transformation of the built environment by submitting stimulating, speculative, and forward-thinking original research, concepts, and case studies based on ideas from biology.
