Role of MicroRNAs and Long Non-coding RNAs in Sjögren’s Syndrome

Dear Colleagues,
Sjögren’s Syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease, characterized by chronic lymphocytic infiltrates in the exocrine glands, in particular lacrimal and salivary glands, causing dryness. SS is a multifactorial disease, caused by a complex interaction of genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors, but its etiology is still partially unknown. Among the mechanism of epigenetic regulation involved in SS development, emerging data support the role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). ncRNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), are a cluster of RNAs that do not encode functional proteins, but play critical roles in the post-transcriptional gene expression. Although the advent of high throughput technologies and the availability of public databases have facilitated the recognition of the complicated interplay among lncRNAs, miRNAs and target genes, their role has not been comprehensively studied in SS. Further research is required to better understand the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of these non-coding RNAs. At the same time, it would also be important to investigate the patient’s sub-phenotypes in order to clarify disease mechanisms underlying the diverse clinical manifestations. These studies could have consequences also in diagnostic and therapeutic fields.
The aim of this Special Issue is to highlight recent advances in the context of role of miRNAs and lncRNAs in Sjögren’s Syndrome.
