Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The abnormal expression and/or altered function of ion channels can impact several cellular mechanisms considered hallmarks of cancer. These hallmark processes include cell death, survival, proliferation, motility and metabolism, cell–cell interactions in the tumor microenvironment, and resistance to treatment. The documented influence of several ion channels in key cancer-progression-associated cellular processes supports a role for some of these proteins as promising therapeutic targets and/or prognostic markers. It was only in the last decade that the expression and activity of various ion channels have been correlated with cancer progression, patient outcome and resistance to therapy. However, the pharmacological modulation of ion channels to treat cancer poses many challenges, such as lack of target specificity and, consequently, strong side effects. The calcium-permeable ion channels have been particularly investigated, since this crucial second messenger can control a broad range of cellular mechanisms and effectors relevant for cancer progression. Still, and despite all the recent and relevant advances in this field, an integrated and detailed understanding of the roles played by the cellular and organelle-specific ion channel repertoires in the different cancer types has not been achieved.

This Special Issue aims to publish state-of-the-art research related to the role of ion channels in cellular processes involved in cancer initiation and progression, covering from basic science to clinical research. Researchers are invited to submit original scientific reports, review articles, commentaries, and perspective pieces.
