Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The growing relevance that the conservation of existing buildings and infrastructure has reached in current society has revealed the need to calibrate effective methods of testing, analysis, implementation of refurbishment measures, as well as maintenance strategies for existing structures.

Until the mid-20th century, a great amount of masonry structures was built, and it was fundamental to develop in-depth studies before the project phase and the refurbishment works. In this regard, among others topics, the following are essential: construction pathology, diagnostic techniques and structural assessment, traditional materials and construction methods, novelty products applicable and new technologies, rehabilitation and durability, reinforcement technologies, construction maintenance, and preventive conservation of built heritage.

The advance in the technology of the chemical and cement industry in the last few decades allows, in palliative terms, to currently have multiple products that, combined in systems, provide the necessary instruments to carry out the interventions of repair, maintenance, and protection of structures. Indeed, the incorporation of polymers and other ingredients into the cementitious mortars and the careful selection and combination of binders and aggregates, together with a strict manufacturing quality control, have made it possible to create compensated shrinkage mortars, highly adherent, with different setting times, with various elastic resistances and modules, variable thicknesses and means of application, and final benefits that ensure the durability of the interventions in which they participate.

This Special Issue is therefore dedicated to “Repair Materials for Existing Structures”, and it intends to welcome contributions on, but not limited to, the following subjects:

  • Mechanical behavior of existing structures;
  • Diagnostic techniques (structural health monitoring/nonminor destructive testing) and structural assessment;
  • Durability of existing structures;
  • Existing structures in aggressive environments;
  • Reinforcement and repair technologies applied to existing structures;
  • Construction maintenance;
  • Preventive conservation of existing structures.
